2021 SALTY TOTE BAG PROJECT
In our first year of operation, we’re raising money to launch the Salty Bags Project.
Did you know that most of the clothes you donate usually end up in a landfill?
What’s worse is that most of them are shipped to countries outside the States (like Nicaragua), leaving markets flooded with an excess of STUFF that can’t possibly all be sold.
Meaning, countries that made the clothing in unsafe factory conditions (which already further polluted the air, water and soil), now also have to carry the burden of filling their landfills with, as well.
As consumerism and fast fashion continues to explode in Western culture, the environment is majorly suffering as a result.
So, we thought why not repurpose the fabric into something simple and useful like a Salty Tote Bag?
Our goal is to create enough Salty Tote Bags that we can dramatically reduce the use of single use plastic bags in our surrounding area.
HOW IT WORKS
We go to major cities and buy large quantities of used clothes at the market.
We purchase sewing machines for our team of local women hired to sew the bags (providing a stable, monthly salary and skill training).
Then, we donate them to local shops to replace their existing plastic bags.
Upon donation, we offer a little education on WHY we’d like to reduce plastic and HOW that will benefit their lives, their children’s lives, and the health of the planet.
Salty Tote Bags will also be available for purchase in our Salty Shop. All of the revenue from the bags will be put back into the project (buying more clothes, paying salaries).
The more the project expands, the more women who are employed, the less fast fashion waste there will be, the more plastic bags will be eradicated, and the more educated our community can become on how to make small steps towards supporting the earth.
